Wistful

My friends and I are part of an organization that funds the self-sustenance of impoverished villages in India, and this picture was taken in Purulia District (West Bengal, India), one of the poorest districts with the lowest education levels in the entire country. Visiting ten tribal villages of Purulia in January 2009 helped us to re-evalute what we should be thankful for; it was a humbling experience in seeing bright eyed children beaming with joy because they could now read the alphabet.
This picture is of a woman who was overwhelmed with gratitude that her grandson was receiving an education. But at the same time she was deeply saddened that though this might make a difference, the difference may not be enough.
